Sometimes he sings traditional songs, plays a flute, rings a bell, or calls out his items in a peculiar, rhythmic, and loud voice. A street hawker deals in a wide variety of everyday items, ranging from toys, cosmetics, ribbons, and cheap garments to sweets, fruits, vegetables, and household utensils. Though he brings a sense of joy and convenience to our doorsteps, his personal life is often fraught with hardship and struggle. He starts his day early in the morning and walks miles after miles, bearing the brunt of scorching heat, biting cold, or heavy rainfall. Because his capital is small, his daily income is very meager. With this poor income, he maintains his family with great difficulty, often living from hand to mouth. He can rarely afford proper food, clothing, or education for his children. Despite his severe poverty, a street hawker earns his livelihood through honest, hard labor and provides an indispensable service to society. Therefore, we should never look down upon him; rather, we should treat him with the respect, dignity, and sympathy that his hard work truly deserves.
