An Honest Woodcutter and a Beautiful Fairy

There lived a woodcutter in a village. One day, he was cutting wood near a pond. Suddenly, his axe fell into the pond. The pond was very deep. The woodcutter did not know how to swim or dive. So, he was sitting there sadly. Then, a wonderful thing happened. A beautiful fairy appeared before the woodcutter. She asked him in a sweet voice, “Why are you so sad? Why are you not cutting wood?” The woodcutter answered sorrowfully, “My axe has fallen into the pond. I can’t cut wood now.” The fairy then showed him an axe made of silver and asked him if it was his axe. The woodcutter saw the axe and replied, “It’s not my axe.” The fairy showed him another axe made of gold and asked, “Is this the axe that you lost?” The woodcutter said, “No, it’s not. My axe is made of iron. It was old.” The fairy showed him the lost axe with a wooden handle. The woodcutter then told happily that was his axe. The fairy became very pleased and gave him the gold and the silver axes too as a reward of his honesty. The woodcutter became very happy getting the axes made of gold and silver. He thanked her and went home. Later, selling those two axes in the market, he made quite a good amount of money. He became solvent and started passing his days happily ever after. Thus, the honest people are rewarded everywhere.

বাংলা অনুবাধঃ এক গ্রামে এক কাঠুরে বাস করত । একদিন তিনি একটি পুকুরের কাছে কাঠ কাটছিলেন । হঠাৎ তার কুড়াল পুকুরে পড়ে গেল । পুকুরটি অনেক গভীর ছিল । কাঠুরে সাঁতার বা ডুব দিতে জানত না । তাই মন খারাপ করে বসে রইলেন । তারপর, একটি বিস্ময়কর ঘটনা ঘটেছে । কাঠুরের সামনে এক সুন্দরী পরী হাজির । সে মিষ্টি কন্ঠে তাকে জিজ্ঞেস করল, “তুমি এত দুঃখিত কেন? তুমি কাঠ কাটছ না কেন?" কাঠুরে দুঃখে উত্তর দিল, “আমার কুড়াল পুকুরে পড়ে গেছে । আমি এখন কাঠ কাটতে পারব না ।" পরী তখন তাকে রূপার তৈরি একটি কুড়াল দেখিয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করলো এটা তার কুঠার কিনা । কাঠুরে কুড়ালটি দেখে উত্তর দিল, "এটা আমার কুড়াল নয় ।" পরী তাকে সোনার তৈরি আরেকটি কুড়াল দেখিয়ে জিজ্ঞেস করল, "এটা কি সেই কুড়ালটা তুমি হারিয়েছ?" কাঠুরে বলল, “না, তা নয় । আমার কুড়াল লোহার তৈরি । এটা পুরানো ছিল ।" পরী তাকে কাঠের হাতলের হারানো কুড়ালটি দেখাল । কাঠুরে তখন খুশি হয়ে বলল ওটা তার কুঠার । পরী খুব খুশি হয়ে তার সততার পুরস্কার হিসেবে তাকে সোনা ও রৌপ্য কুড়ালও দিল । কাঠুরে সোনা-রূপার তৈরি কুড়াল পেয়ে খুব খুশি হল । তিনি তাকে ধন্যবাদ জানিয়ে বাড়িতে চলে গেলেন । পরে ওই দুটি কুড়াল বাজারে বিক্রি করে বেশ ভালো অর্থ উপার্জন করেন । সে স্বচ্ছল হয়ে উঠল এবং সুখে দিন কাটাতে লাগল । এইভাবে, সৎ লোকেরা সর্বত্র পুরস্কৃত হয় ।
